Master Consistent AI Creation: A Guide to Gen-4 Image References on Runway

When creating art or storytelling projects with artificial intelligence, maintaining consistency has historically been one of the biggest hurdles. Keeping the exact same character, style, or object across multiple generated scenes often felt like a roll of the dice. Runway’s Gen-4 Image References feature changes that entirely, giving creators precise control over how visual assets carry over from one generation to the next.

What Are Gen-4 Image References?

Gen-4 Image References allow you to upload up to three reference images to guide your new generations. Whether you want to isolate a specific character and drop them into an entirely new environment, merge multiple artistic styles, or keep a signature object consistent, this tool bridges the gap between imagination and continuity.

Instead of relying solely on text descriptions to recreate a subject, the AI looks directly at your reference photos to preserve facial features, clothing, or aesthetic traits.

Setting Up Your Reference Images

For the best results, preparation is key. Runway recommends starting with a solid foundation—often called a “blank canvas” approach:

  • Lighting and Quality: Use high-quality photos featuring even, natural lighting without harsh shadows.
  • Expressions: Neutral subject expressions make it significantly easier for the AI to transform the character into different poses or scenarios later.
  • Tagging: Once you upload your image into the References panel, give it a clear, memorable name (like @alex or @sketchstyle).

How to Use References in Your Prompts

Once your images are uploaded and tagged, putting them to work is straightforward:

  1. Navigate to Tool Mode: Open Runway, head to the Tool mode in the left-hand sidebar, and select the Image tab.
  2. Toggle References: Turn on the References feature to open your active asset panel.
  3. Select and Prompt: Choose up to three active references for a single generation. When writing your text prompt, you can use the @ symbol to instantly autocomplete your reference name.
  • Single Reference Prompts: Perfect for quick exploration. You can keep a character’s face consistent while changing their outfit, setting, or action (for example: @alex wearing a retro jacket, skateboarding through a neon-lit city street).
  • Multi-Reference Prompts: If you want to combine a character from one image with a background or style from another, you can select multiple inputs to blend elements cohesively.

Taking Your Creations Further

The creative process doesn’t stop with a single still image. Gen-4 References support advanced iteration: if you generate an image you love, you can hover over it, save it as a brand-new reference, and build upon it for your next scene.

Even better, you can seamlessly transition your static creations into motion. By selecting the camera or video icon on your final output, you can load your consistent character directly into Runway’s generative video tools, bringing your custom stories to life with smooth, natural animation.
