The Evolution of STEREO: Inside the Electronic Project from Haloo Helsinki! Masterminds

When major artists step outside their comfort zones, magic often happens. For STEREO (stylized as STEREO), this meant trading the stadium-sized pop-rock anthems of one of Finland’s biggest bands for the pulsing, neon-lit landscape of electronic dance music (EDM).

Created by Leo Hakanen and Jere Marttila—best known as the powerhouse guitarist-songwriter duo behind the megahit Finnish band Haloo Helsinki!—STEREO emerged as an exciting creative outlet during their parent band’s hiatus.

The Genesis of the Project

In late 2018 and heading into 2019, Haloo Helsinki! took a well-deserved break from their relentless touring and recording schedule. Rather than resting, Hakanen and Marttila channeled their boundless energy into a brand-new collaborative project. Operating as producers, songwriters, vocalists, and DJs, they formed STEREO to explore modern electronic production, club beats, and a slick, futuristic pop aesthetic.

Right out of the gate, they made waves by partnering with top-tier international mixing talent. For instance, their early breakout track “Vuosien päästä” was mixed by Miles Walker, an industry heavyweight renowned for his work with global superstars like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, and Coldplay.

Collaborative Spirit and Chart Success

What set STEREO apart was its collaborative framework. Instead of relying on a single frontman, the duo acted as master architects, inviting a diverse roster of prominent Finnish artists to feature on their tracks. This approach blended EDM sensibilities with organic pop storytelling.

Some of their most notable collaborative tracks include:

  • “Sä saat mut palasiksi” (featuring Samu Haber)
  • “Bonnie & Clyde” (featuring Ida Paul & Kalle Lindroth)
  • “Woo Woo” (featuring rock icon Michael Monroe)
  • “Vuosien päästä” (featuring Etta)
  • “Rauhaa ja rakkautta” (featuring Aste)

By bridging the gap between underground electronic club culture and mainstream Finnish radio pop, STEREO quickly carved out a distinct identity that felt both fresh and familiar.

Legacy and Impact

Though initially conceived as a project tied to a specific chapter of their musical journey, STEREO showcased the sheer versatility of Hakanen and Marttila as modern producers. It proved that artistic curiosity can breathe new life into an already stellar career, leaving fans with a dynamic body of work that continues to light up playlists long after its initial release.
