Before he became the undisputed “Netflix Son” and a global Hallyu phenomenon lighting up screens in Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and Forecasting Love and Weather, Song Kang was navigating a quiet, introspective youth far away from the flashing lights of television studios.

Long before his face adorned billboards worldwide and his social media following skyrocketed into the tens of millions, the actor’s journey was defined by quiet uncertainty, athletic roots, and a late-blooming realization of his true calling.

An Athletic and Artistic Household

Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, South Korea, Song Kang grew up in a family heavily influenced by sports and the arts. His father was an artistic gymnast, and his grandfather was also deeply involved in athletics. Given his lineage, physical movement and sports were second nature, though Song Kang humorously noted later in interviews that he didn’t feel cut out for a professional athletic path.

On the creative side, his mother worked as a piano teacher. This led to Song learning the piano at a young age—even winning elementary school music competition awards. However, like many children pressured into practicing, he initially stepped away from the keys, only to rediscover his love for the instrument years later for a drama role.

Despite growing up in an active household, the young Song Kang was notably introverted and shy. Friends and classmates from his school days remember him as someone who kept to himself, rarely chasing the spotlight or dreaming out loud about becoming a celebrity.

The Search for Direction

As he transitioned into adulthood, Song Kang faced a phase familiar to many young people: absolute uncertainty about what to do with his future. He didn’t have an immediate career roadmap. For a period, he drifted through various jobs and ideas, spending time trying to figure out what path suited him best.

Movies became his unexpected escape. While watching various films—most notably noting the sci-fi drama The Butterfly Effect as a formative cinematic experience—he found himself captivated by the emotional breadth and power of storytelling. The seed was planted: acting wasn’t just about fame; it was a profound vehicle for human expression. This realization served as a turning point, prompting him to pursue higher education in the arts. He enrolled in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University, stepping onto the formal grounds of actor training.

Rejecting Idol Trajectory to Focus on Acting

As his visuals and tall physique began to stand out, the entertainment industry naturally took notice. Before making his official acting debut, Song Kang received multiple casting offers from K-pop idol agencies.

In an era where many aspiring young stars leap at any chance to enter the entertainment sphere—often spending years training as idol singers and dancers—Song Kang turned them down. He recognized early on that his heart belonged strictly to acting. He didn’t want to be on stage holding a microphone as a pop singer; he wanted to live inside characters on screen.

The 2017 Breakthrough and the Grinding Years

That steadfast focus paid off when he signed with Namoo Actors and officially debuted in the 2017 tvN romantic-comedy series The Liar and His Lover, playing a supporting sweet-natured youth named Baek Jin-woo.

Looking back at his pre-debut and early rookie days reveals a humble origin story. Before global stardom, multi-million-dollar Netflix budgets, and leading roles, Song Kang was just a shy young man from Suwon watching movies, figuring out his path, and holding firm to an unwavering conviction that he was meant to be an actor.
