From Art Household to Global Icon: The Pre-Debut Story of Song Kang
Long before he earned the title “Son of Netflix” and captivated millions across the globe in smash-hit K-dramas like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was simply a young man in Suwon, South Korea, trying to figure out his path.
While his pre-debut days might seem like a quiet prologue to sudden stardom, his journey to the screen is marked by artistic roots, rejected idol casting offers, and a late-blooming passion for acting that changed his life entirely.
An Environment Rooted in Creativity
Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in a household naturally attuned to the arts. Creativity wasn’t just a hobby in his family—it was a way of life. His father was an artistic gymnast, instilling a lifelong appreciation for physical discipline and movement, while his mother worked as a piano teacher.
Growing up surrounded by this creative backdrop meant Song Kang was exposed to expression and performance from a young age, even if he didn’t immediately picture himself in front of a camera.
The Idol Scout Turning Point
As he grew into his signature towering height (standing at 186 cm or 6’1″) and striking visuals, it didn’t take long for the entertainment industry to notice. During his university years—where he studied in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University—Song Kang was approached multiple times by talent scouts with offers to train as a K-pop idol.
For many young aspirants, an idol casting call is a golden ticket. However, Song Kang turned them down. With characteristic self-awareness, he later recalled, “I’m not good at singing or dancing.” Knowing his true strengths lay elsewhere, he politely declined the stage-idol route to focus entirely on his studies and his burgeoning love for cinema and dramatic performance.
Finding His Footing in Acting
Entering the world of acting wasn’t an instant, seamless transition, however. Song Kang has openly shared that when he first joined an acting academy, he struggled with severe shyness.
“I had to act in front of other students, and I kept laughing out of shyness,” he recalled of his early classes. “Every time I went home, I thought, ‘Is this really what I should keep doing?’ But I didn’t want to give up.”
That resilience paid off. He pushed past his initial stage fright, sharpened his craft at Konkuk University, and began appearing in music videos in early 2017—such as SURAN’s “Love Story” and The ADE’s “Sweet Summer Night”—giving fans their very first glimpse of his cinematic charm.
Stepping Into the Spotlight
Song Kang’s official acting debut arrived in March 2017 with a supporting role in the tvN romance series The Liar and His Lover, where he played a lovable, music-obsessed guitarist. Doors quickly began to open: he took on variety show projects like Village Survival, the Eight and landed co-hosting duties on the popular music program SBS Inkigayo in 2018 alongside SEVENTEEN’s Mingyu and DIA’s Chaeyeon.
These early stepping stones set the stage for his breakout global audition for Netflix’s Love Alarm, where he beat out massive competition to secure his first major leading role.
Looking back at his pre-debut days—from a shy student laughing through acting exercises to a grounded artist who trusted his gut over fleeting trends—it is clear that Song Kang’s steady patience laid the foundation for the powerhouse actor he is today.
