Giants of the Savannah: Inside Africa’s Longest Airport Runway
When people picture major aviation hubs, bustling metropolitan terminals and neon-lit cityscapes usually come to mind. However, the holder of the record for the longest airport runway in Africa sits far away from the continent’s largest capital cities, tucked into a quiet, semi-arid corner of South Africa.
Welcome to Upington International Airport (UTN), an aviation marvel whose massive stretch of asphalt defies its sleepy surroundings.
The Record-Breaker: Upington’s Colossal Strip
The crown for Africa’s longest runway goes to Upington’s Runway 17/35, which measures an astonishing 4,900 meters (16,076 feet) long. To put that into perspective, you could line up nearly 45 football fields end-to-end along this single strip of pavement.
It is so long that it comfortably ranks among the longest commercial airport runways in the entire world, often leaving international pilots awestruck when they descend upon the Northern Cape.
Why is it so Long?
You might wonder why a relatively small town needs a runway that can swallow up massive aircraft with ease. The answer is a mix of Cold War history, geography, and physics:
- The Boeing 747 Factor: In the 1970s, South Airways needed a strategic refueling stop for its Boeing 747 fleet flying international routes to Europe. Upington was chosen as the ideal geographic midpoint.
- High Altitudes and Heat: Physics plays a major role in aviation. Upington experiences scorching summer temperatures and sits at a relatively high elevation (about 851 meters above sea level). Hot, “thin” air provides less aerodynamic lift, meaning heavy, fuel-laden planes require much longer distances to safely take off.
- The Cold War Era: During the apartheid era and international airspace restrictions, South African Airways faced flight bans over many African nations. Planes had to fly long detours around the continent’s bulge, requiring maximum fuel loads that demanded an exceptionally long runway to get airborne.
Upington Today: A Quiet Giant with a Unique Purpose
While it no longer sees the heavy stream of daily international passenger traffic it once did, Upington International Airport is far from a ghost town.
Today, it serves as a crucial hub for cargo operations and an ingenious aircraft parking and maintenance facility. Because of the dry climate, which prevents rust and corrosion, major airlines and leasing companies often store idle or retired aircraft here. It is also famously used by international car manufacturers for hot-weather prototype testing in the surrounding desert.
Other Contenders Across the Continent
While Upington holds the absolute top spot, Africa features several other impressively long runways designed to handle wide-body jets and heavy cargo:
